The Effect of the Sun on Our Skin

Despite the life-giving sustenance we get from the sun, too much of it can be a bad thing. Yes, being in the sun makes us feel healthy and even gives us a good dose of vitamin D. But too much of it can start to have detrimental effects on our health. Too much sun can cause skin cancer because of the constant exposure to the sun’s ultraviolet rays. These UV rays can damage your skin cells and cause reddish unsightly burns on unprotected skin.

It’s important to protect your skin all year round and not only when the weather is hot. Even when your skin isn’t burning, and you don’t feel hot, UV rays can still burn your skin. That’s why it’s important to protect your skin no matter what the air temperature is.

There are simple ways that you can protect yourself from the harsh effects of the sun. Here’s some:

Shade – You can dramatically reduce your chances of getting skin cancer by simply staying in the shade more often. Doesn’t matter if you’re under a tree, an umbrella, or a man-made shelter, as long as you’re not in direct sunlight, you’ll be doing your skin a favor.

Clothing – When going to the beach, it’s tempting to just be bare-bodied or in a tiny swimsuit, but the attire is actually long-sleeved shirts and pants that can shield your skin from the sun’s harsh UV rays. Fabrics that are tightly woven offer the best protection from the sun and its effects. Darker colors will also offer more protection than lighter colors.

Hats – Despite being worn more as a fashion statement these days, the humble hat actually offers excellent sun protection for your face and head. Choose one that allows good ventilation to keep your head cool.

Lastly, don’t forget your sunscreen. Make sure to use one with a higher SPF and reapply regularly!
